Thanksgiving Round-Up

In Uncategorized on November 24, 2014 at 8:04 pm

Oh man, y’all – I have been slacking, slacking, slacking here. I should definitely stop making promises, like how I’m going to share the recipes from my FarmBox, or anything even remotely involving guarantees. Not worth it. For the record, everything is going super well on my end, which partially accounts for my absence. It’s been a busy fall with grant-writing, new data analysis techniques, and lots and lots of quality reading (and dog time, obviously). I’ve been to some new places, new trails, and done some new things – all good. And now, because I have my hat in hand, and no new Thanksgiving recipes for you, I’m here to provide you with  a round-up of things I’ve made in the past, things that are traditionally on my Thanksgiving table, and some other beautiful and wonderful suggestions from others. I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving, wherever you may be, and whomever you may be with.

And, from around the web:

  • I hope you’ve already seen this etiquette guide by Bon Appetit, but if not… (sadly, my own family will not be following some of these well-thought out ideas, but alas).
  • This awesome recipe guide, state-by-state (really intrigued by cranberry sauce with chiles, courtesy of Arizona)
  • Traditional, fool-proof pumpkin pie, for those of you who are into that sort of thing (dairy-free alternative here)
  • Having made this apple pie twice last year, I can attest to the fact that it is heavenly. Go forth. Make it. Never use another recipe ever again (unless it’s this one)
  • For an unconventional side, this is the best savory tart ever. Ever.

Wishing you all a wonderful holiday!

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Garam Masala Bread

You may have noticed by now that I have a bit of a love affair with quick breads. I think one of the first things I made as a kid was this lovely banana chocolate chip bread, so maybe that’s where my love comes from? I have no idea. What I do know is that I love it. I’m not sure I’ve come across a quick bread that I don’t love. When it comes to fall, I love nothing more than a little slice of pumpkin bread; if it has chocolate in it, so much the better.  Read the rest of this entry »

Vegetarian Stuffing

It’s been a little while, hey? So many things have happened in the past months! I brought home my beautiful, fantastic, slightly silly Sirius. He’s now a whopping 45 pounds, and a wonderful eight months old. He’s an amazing source of joy, learning, and amusement in my life. I moved; I left Colorado again, this time for the desert landscape of Phoenix, Arizona. I’ve learned that after living in 116 degree weather, 90 feels pleasant, and 80 at night is the time that you start to need a jacket after a while. I’ve learned how to know when a dust storm is coming, and that I should always have extra water on hand, because water gets pumped up hill here. I am filled with joy to come home to a bounding, brown blur of dog at the end of the day. I am often trepidatious about my future. I am uncertain much of the time, but I am learning.

Bats 3

I always start off by saying the week was quiet, and realizing that it was anything but. When I look back on this past week, I can truly and immediately say that it was not quiet. We didn’t celebrate Thanksgiving when the States did, in part because our Australian director didn’t know when it was, and in part because it ultimately fell during one of the data collection weeks. Instead, we celebrated on November 29th, and, in the spirit of a true Thanksgiving, we invited a lot of the community members. Our estimated head count was 69 heading into Thursday, and as a result, we knew that we needed an incredible amount of food. Read the rest of this entry »

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins

Wow, I feel like I might actually be running out of things to tell you – I suppose this is what happens when I post for the third day in a row (I sort of hope I’m making up for abandoning for three weeks – between posting three recipes last week, and three this week [and that’s just to start with – hopefully I’ll have more!], I hope I’ve won you back…).
