Well, I’m back in Arizona. After spending the summer in some very different places, it’s almost reassuring to be back in a familiar place. It would be entirely reassuring except that it’s 103 today, and I’m supposed to think that it’s “cool”. I remember arriving here last year and thinking that it was just the absolute worst, and I think that I’m past the point of thinking it’s the absolute worst (it is, but it’s actually better than it was last year, so I feel less validated in my complaints), and I’m on to thinking the people who live around me are totally crazy. I saw a guy running when it was mid-day and 97 degrees today. I saw a woman running in pants when it was 80 degrees the other morning. I understand that it’s all relative, but I don’t think I’ll ever understand running in pants at 80 degrees. I can barely wear pants to class!

Remember how I said my last post wasn’t about resolutions? It wasn’t. I did try and make some goals or resolutions for myself this year, though. Or at least for this semester. I’m really trying to go out and do things, as a way to make myself feel more settled, and maybe encourage myself to begin to feel more content here. So, I’m trying to go to classes at the gym. I’ve never been a big gym-goer; I’d much rather be out running, breathing in the clear air, out cycling with the wind in my hair, or hiking with the pine needles quietly crunching under my boots. I’m still trying to do those things, but I really wanted to take yoga, and so I did my first class this week. It was sort of arduous, and I’m incredibly sore in places that I haven’t been sore since I was dancing regularly, but it was very enjoyable, and I’m definitely going back next week.

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Garam Masala Bread

You may have noticed by now that I have a bit of a love affair with quick breads. I think one of the first things I made as a kid was this lovely banana chocolate chip bread, so maybe that’s where my love comes from? I have no idea. What I do know is that I love it. I’m not sure I’ve come across a quick bread that I don’t love. When it comes to fall, I love nothing more than a little slice of pumpkin bread; if it has chocolate in it, so much the better.  Read the rest of this entry »

Butternut Squash Cookies

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I am having a very serious love affair with butternut squash. This is somewhat funny to me, because up until my junior year of college, I didn’t even know that I liked winter squash. Zucchini? Sure. The yellow equivalent of zucchini? Absolutely. Especially in pastas, stir fries, quick breads; you name it, summer squash was more or less my thing. Winter squash? I turned my nose up at it. I don’t know if it was because it was a roasted vegetable, and up until then, my picky palate had despised the thought of roasted vegetables, or if I couldn’t quite get beyond the apparently mushy texture, but it was way not my thing.

Olive Oil Banana Bread

In Uncategorized on March 25, 2012 at 3:27 pm

I feel like I’m one of those food bloggers who tends to be behind the trends. Macarons, for one thing; they’re all the rage, and yet, I only just bought a macaron-specific cookbook (more on that later). Olive oil bread is another one of these trends. When I first saw a post for an olive oil cake, I turned my nose up in disgust. A cake without butter, I thought, was not cake. It did not warrant the label cake. But then Heidi’s cake recipe snuck up on me. It has olive oil, yes, but it also has enough sugar (and chocolate, let’s be fair) to make it actually seem like a cake.

It should be noted that I was mostly inspired to make this cake out of sheer desperation to avoid working on my thesis. I am graduating from college in a little bit under two months, which I still haven’t wrapped my head around. My thesis is due in a little under three weeks, which I seem to refuse to wrap my head around. Rather than working like mad (like I should be) I have instead been diligently avoiding thinking about this life-changing project which could very well help my chances of getting into grad school next year. Instead…well, what have I done instead? Clearly I’ve also been avoiding this blog (I’m not sure if I just can’t stomach responsibility or writing or both), but I have baked, photographed, and knitted a prodigious amount. I have also made some time for my half-marathon training, and have spent a lot of time studiously avoiding the realization that I’m leaving school for at least a year in two months. It’s a scary time. And it’s doubly scary because I’m getting ready to leave another amazing family. A group of people who I have truly grown to love, and who I’m struggling to imagine living without.
